January Newsletter

SO MUCH SNOW!!

I hope everyone had wonderful and safe snow days.  It will be nice to finally get back to some routine after winter break.  It was great seeing the kids on the first day back!  We have all had to readjust to being in school all day long, but so far it’s going GREAT. I knew it would take a bit of time to really get back in the swing of things…but I‘m not wasting anytime.
This month, we will do an intro unit for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  We began last week, but with so much snow, we are starting from the beginning and will continue for the rest of January.

Have a wonderful month:)

SUN School - Winter

Winter term SUN session has already started!

DIBELS

In January, Faubion students will have DIBELS testing.  This is an assessment that covers many aspects of reading. In first grade, the students show their skills in fluency, phoneme segmentation and nonsense word fluency.  We will do a bit of review for the next two weeks.  PLEASE feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions.  I will share results with families later this month.

Thank You!

Thank you SO much for those of you who were able to volunteer for our SCRAP field trip in December!  It was a HUGE success!  A special thanks to Bianca Karjalainen for organizing the trip!  Don’t forget, we have another field trip coming January 31st to see Fly Guy: The Musical with the Oregon Children’s Theatre.

Auction Project

The 3rd annual Faubion Be Mine Auction will happen Saturday, February 25th from 5:00-9:00 at the North Star Ballroom at 635 N Killingsworth Court, Portland, Oregon 97217

We invite you to our auction to raise funds for Faubion School. Find more information at

Our class will be donating a special class project to the auction as well!  If you are interested in helping to plan or volunteer for this project, please let me know:)

Calendar Adjustments Update

Thank you for your continued support during this unusual winter weather. We understand and share your frustration with the number of school closures and wanted to give you an update about how we believe we can make up some of the lost instruction over the next five months of the school year.

The Board voted on December 13, 2016 to add two days at the end of the school year to make up for two days lost in December. Since that vote additional school closures have occurred due to weather.
This Tuesday, January 17, 2017, district staff will present the following proposal for the Board’s consideration to account for the other closures:
1    Add another day to the calendar- extending the last day of school by three days to June 14, 2017.
2    Eliminate the rest of late starts for elementary and middle schools and early releases for high schools, which will restore approximately ten hours of additional instruction for elementary schools and four hours for high schools.
Please note that if approved, the elimination of late starts begins this Wednesday, January 18, 2017.

Birthdays

Don’t forget, if you would like to celebrate a birthday in class, please make sure it is a healthy treat.  Fruit or granola make for great options.  Also, if organizing a birthday party outside of school, please do your best to handout initiation outside of the school day.
Thanks!:)

Donors Choose

Our request for a nonfiction leveled library was fully funded last week!  We should get our new reading materials soon!

Rainbow Words

Rainbow Words went home last week!  Please take the time to practice these words.  When your child is fluent in reading each word, I will test them on reading and spelling.  Every Tuesday, I will check to see if they are ready to move onto the next set of words.  Thank you for supporting this our leaning at home.

Field Trip Volunteers

Our class has a fieldtrip coming up on January 31st.  Many of you signed the permission slip for this trip at the same time as our trip to SCRAP.  If I do not have a slip returned from your family, I will send home an additional form.  If you are interested in volunteering, and you have not yet volunteered for a trip this school year, please let me know if you are interested by the end of the week, Jan 20. Make sure you have filed out the PPS background check.  After this date, I will open up the volunteer sign-up to all families who might be interested. There are only 3 volunteers spots available for this trip:)
