January Newsletter

Happy New Year!!!

:)

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe winter break.  It was great seeing the kids on the first day back!  We have all had to readjust to being in school all day long, but so far it’s going GREAT. I knew it would take a bit of time to really get back in the swing of things…but I didn’t waste anytime.
This month, we will also do a small intro unit for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  We will begin this week.  It will go on for about two weeks.
Of course, reading and math were reintroduced immediately.  We will start a small penguin unit as part of math later this month, focusing on different kinds of penguins.  Using the penguin theme, our topic will be measuring and sorting.

Have a wonderful month:)

Homework

Over the winter break, I thought about my class of students A LOT.  I also had all of your families in my mind over these last couple of weeks.  During this time, I really started thinking about ways to make homework more meaningful.
After 10 years of sending homework in the same way (worksheets that are sent home, completed, and retuned to school), I think it’s time for a change!
We will all benefit from weekly homework that has a foundation set in communication.  My goal is to make homework much more informative as to how your child is doing in class, and ways I can support you at home to be more informed about your child’s academic success.
As the students adjust to being back in school after the break (and SNOWJ) I am sending home a packet to practice reading fluency.  This will be our homework for the next 2 weeks, for you to pace out however you’d like.  There is nothing you need to return to school.  Our benchmark goals in first grade are for your students to be able to read 23 words per minute in mid/late January and 47 words per minute in mid/late May.

A new and improved homework folder will come home, starting January 19.

SUN School - Winter

Winter term SUN registration forms come home today (1/6).  If interested, please be sure to fill it out ASAP as classes are first come, first serve.

DIBELS

In January, Faubion students will have DIBELS testing.  This is an assessment that covers many aspects of reading. In first grade, the students show their skills in fluency, phoneme segmentation and nonsense word fluency.  We will do a bit of review for the next two weeks.  PLEASE feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions.  I will share results with families later this month.

Thank You!

Thank you all so much for giving me such wonderful gifts for Christmas.  Everything was so wonderful and thoughtful.  The kindness and caring you all have is a blessing for any teacher, and I am so grateful that I have all of you in my life here at Faubion.
